The French House
Architecture design
Final Construction 2026. The French House is a timber construction built using the traditional Japanese technique of shou sugi ban, where wood is charred to enhance both its durability and natural beauty. Set in the quiet countryside of Auvergne, the façade facing the road remains almost entirely closed, ensuring privacy and serenity, while the garden side opens wide to capture the warmth of the afternoon and evening sun.
A central passage divides the house into two wings beneath one continuous roof — a simple, deliberate gesture that anchors the building in its landscape. The material palette is raw and authentic, highlighting the texture of the charred wood and the subtle play of light across its surface. Inside, spaces flow fluidly toward the garden, fostering an immediate and intimate connection with nature.
With its minimalist form and measured proportions, The French House offers a living environment that is both intimate and open, protective yet expansive — an architecture of restraint, light, and crafted simplicity.
