A Village in the Sky: Camden Rooftop Penthouses

Architecture design

In the heart of London’s Camden borough, a striking new addition brings a unique village-style living concept to the rooftops. Five sculptural penthouses, designed with pyramidal roofs, now sit lightly atop an existing apartment block, creating a new layer of homes that feel both elevated and connected to the surrounding community.

Located within the Denmark Street Conservation Area, and adjacent to the Grade I-listed St Giles-in-the-Fields church, the project carefully balances bold design with historical sensitivity. The new homes are set back and shaped to preserve key views from the churchyard, while avoiding overshadowing nearby buildings that rise up to 15 storeys high.

The design adds ten new dwellings in total — ten atop the building, five replacing a ground-floor carpark, and two in a new block beside Pendrell House. Chamfered rooflines break down the massing into pyramidal forms, creating a dynamic but respectful silhouette that echoes nearby landmarks such as Central St Giles.

Green terraces and planted walls are integrated at multiple levels, introducing layers of vegetation that soften the architecture and offer residents shared garden spaces. At the fifth level, a communal green garden becomes a hub for gathering, encouraging a slower pace of life and deeper connections between neighbours.

Materially, the design transitions from the original brick structure to corrugated steel above — blending old and new while helping the additions integrate into the broader skyline. This shift also expresses the architectural concept of a “lightweight” village above the dense city fabric.

Through thoughtful form-making, sensitive context response, and an emphasis on community and greenery, the project offers a new model for urban living — one that lifts the spirit, not just the skyline.
